Promotion drive maintains its momentum despite the prolonged wintry weather!
On an absolutely foul day, muddy underfoot, driving snow and where the game on the second pitch had to be cancelled, Bridge took apart mid table Garforth. They didn't do it efficiently, but like a relentless tide the pressure left the visitors washed up on the beach.
Playing up the slope the forwards tore into the opposition, with good runs by 2nd rows Sam Whittaker and Liam Roebuck, which left Garforth on the back foot and they remained there for the rest of the game. The rejuvenated scrum pushed as though their lives depended on it with prop Ricky James showing the success of switching to loosehead, the ball meandered out to wing Callum Green who scrambled over in the corner.
Stand off Ben Westby added the second slicing through, slippery as an eel and a push over try claimed by Ray Waller saw the third. A neat dummy from Garforth fullback Bobby Tuer bamboozled the home defence and he scored wide out to leave the half time score 15-5. When the ball was kept close, Bridge always threatened, but there were too many long hopeful balls and players seemed to think they had to try and pass, despite the conditions.
The second half was much the same, Nigel Dowkes slid over from 5 metres and the bonus point was earned. A quickly taken free kick was taken on by James Lambert, then Ricky James, before handed on a plate to No 8 Ray Waller for his second. The Physio, Tracey Rhodes seemed to be on the pitch more than the ball, as the visitors began finding injuries that led to uncontested scrums, a tactic that they had used at their own fixture. This gave them some scrum possession, but only delayed the inevitable.
A long range attack, with good short passes for a change, saw Lambert score wideout as the oppositions heads dropped. A pick up at the base of the scrum and Waller cantered over untouched beneath the posts and he added his fourth as the opposition fell off him as he shook his hips. Scot Bowskill had an off day with his place kicking with only 3 conversions, but in this mood Stocksbridge could rely on the try count not in need of his normally reliable boot.
Next week, weather permitting, the delayed silver cup quarter final against Goole.
