Stocksbridge Rugby slipped to their 2nd defeat of the season as Thornensians proved too strong, eventually going down by 41pts to 14pts.
Dom Mannion, fit again after injury, replaced the unavailable Ryan Smith & Pat O'Leary was given the No 13 shirt to partner his brother Liam in the centres.
A bright start for the home side with Whitaker & Smith in the thick of things, gave a good crowd hope of another home victory, but not for long.
A clash of heads between Joe Jones & Pat O'Leary left them both cut & Jones was replaced by David Brown, who announced his arrival with a shuddering tackle on his new opposite number.
Thorne began to win more possession & gain territory as the home side dropped off too many tackles, & went ahead on 13minutes with a well worked try, backed up with a second after Pat O'Leary was shown a yellow card as a result of persistent team offending at the breakdown.
With a man down & poor covering defence, Stocksbridge Rugby leaked further tries as Thorne racked up a first half bonus point, before big Sam Whitaker strode over the line to register the first points for Stocksbridge as the forwards gained some momentum, Bowskill converted.
James 'chopsey' Lambert was introduced from the bench & Stocksbridge spent the rest of the first half camped inside the visitors red zone, scrum after scrum was won, but Thorne held firm. A sin bin for a technical offence reduced the visitors to 14 men as Stocksbridge kept the pressure on.
The next scrum offence would have resulted in a penalty try, & given Stocksbridge some hope however, it didn't come & the visitors were mighty relieved to hear the half time whistle, & a chance to regroup. Half Time Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts - Thorne 24pts.
There was a succession of interchanges as Head Coach Tyers shuffled his squad around in search of a more cutting edge, & Stocksbridge held their own for the first 20 scoreless minutes. Liam O'Leary went close with a clean break, Smith & Lambert rumbled to the try line, but the visitors defended their line very well. Another Thorne breakaway try on 61 minutes, probably signalled the beginning of the end for this clash, & Mannion was also sin binned, harshly for a clumsy tackle on his opposite winger. Thorne scored 2 further tries but, Stocksbridge had the last word with a Dave Brown special, wrecking ball run from 20 metres out, which Bowskill converted to leave the final score Stocksbridge Rugby 14pts - Thornensians 41pts.
The Bradfield Brewery man of the match award went to Joe Smith who also scooped the Bradfield Brewery Player of the Month award for September. Joe Smith is kindly sponsored by Fox Catering.
'it wasn't all bad' reflected Head Coach Andy Tyers 'we made some poor decisions today & our overall game management wasn't up to scratch' adding 'we have come up against one of the best sides in the comp & matched them for long periods of time'
Stocksbridge Rugby make the tricky trip to Halifax this weekend as they look to get back to winning ways, but 'it won't be easy' said Assistant Coach, Mick Shouler 'we've had them watched & they will be a tough opponent, so we will need to prepare well
