Wetherby RFC
Stocksbridge RFC

The 2015-16 season was brought to a close last weekend at Wetherby with a the Stocksbridge Rugby coach trip celebrating the year of rugby into the night despite the disappointing result on the day.

Much had changed since the Pigs' last, victorious venture to Wetherby over two years ago, with the home side now sitting unbeaten at the summit of Yorkshire Division 3 on the verge of attaining a League record points tally whilst the visitors had cemented their solid, if uninspiring mid-table position.

Still without fan favourite Stefan 'The Deepcar Express' Kasmierski and skipper Keenan, the Stocksbridge Rugby contingent, with little to play for but pride, set about trying generate some field position and momentum from the off with some tireless work around the fringe from the Pigs' pack. Nevertheless, the initial abundance of enthusiasm quickly deteriorated as the afternoon became a masterclass in counter-attacking rugby from the home side who ran in six tries in the first stanza.

The second period continued in much the same vein with Wetherby running in a further three tries. Scant consolation for Stocksbridge Rugby came in the form of a well worked score, against the run of play in the 75th minute, which saw fullback Smith seize a rare opportunity to utilise his blistering pace, scampering over in the corner.

With the final score of 63-5, The Pigs were well beaten on the day by a team very much in the ascendancy. Special credit goes to Gary 'Tiger' Woodcock who on his full first team debut was awarded Man of the Match by the opposition for his workmanlike 80 minute performance.

Following head coach Andy 'BFT' Tyers' knee surgery, stand in Coach for the Day and long-term injury victim Pete Newton commented: "We were simply outclassed today by a ruthlessly efficient team, but despite the numerous disappointments this season, at times we are dangerously close to looking like a great squad. To have comfortably maintained our position in Yorkshire Division 3 is encouraging but there is undoubtedly plenty of hard work required in the off-season if we are to improve in on our final execution and become a consistent, competitive force at this level."
