Stocksbridge 14 old modernians 12
In a rearranged game from previous week stocksbridge welcomed old modernians to a sunny bridge. With pigs 7th & mods 8th a close contest was predicted & duly occurred.pigs made an unusually fast start determined to put a marker down early but a misdemeanour at a ruck allowed mods to kick a penalty for a 3 -0 lead against the run of play.Suitably stoked up & with returning flanker ricky rowett to the fore stocksbridge piled on the pressure leading to a 5 metre scrum from which pigs steamrollered mods pack backwards forcing them to concede a penalty try under sticks which adam frith converted for a 7 - 3 pigs lead.At this point with scrum in total control it looked a case of how many would pigs win by but a combination of fussy refereeing, misplaced enthusiasm & brain freeze led to pigs conceding numerous penalties from which mods reduced arrears to 7- 6 at half time.Coaching staff relayed a dont panic as you are the better team message but second half began as first ended with numerous penalties being conceded ensuring a massive defensive effort was required to prevent mods scoring a try but still 2 penalties were kicked to leave pigs 12 - 7 behind going into last quarter.Pigs were suitably stunned into a massive effort & with veteran stand off ricky christopherson stretching his victorian legs & pulling the strings pigs piled forward.A 5 metre scrum was awarded to pigs from which ref allowed mods to collapse 3 times before sheer power told & scrum half frith touched down & comverted for a 14 -12 lead.Remaining time was dominated by pigs until last seconds when mods winger hurtled down line looking certain to score only for deepcar express stefan kazmierski to bundle him into touch by corner flag.assistant coach mick shouler said"this was a victory for sheer determination & a refusal to be beaten. This trait will stand us in good stead for next seasons push but we will work to reduce our penalty count in training.up the pigs"
Man of the match was awarded to Ricky Rowett who's is proudly sponsored by Paul Widdows , Wharncliffe side forge works.
