Stocksbridge Rugby backed up last week's win over top of the table Knottingley, with another strong performance against High flyers Aireborough at Coal Pit Lane
The pigs were the first to score through a Pete Newton try, after an Aireborough clearance kick was charged down by hard working Reece Aspin. The conversion was missed, but Stocksbridge were looking strong, as they continued to make ground around the ruck area with their modified and more direct approach. Aire' tried to relieve the pressure by kicking the ball deep into the Stocksbridge half, but were continuously put back into their own third with a series of truly sensational and electrifying runs from fullback Stefan Kazmierski, who was unlucky not to score on at least two occasions.
However, a lapse in concentration gave the away team an opportunity to attack out wide and they duly punished the Pigs with a try, which was converted to give Aireborough a lead against the run of play. Stocksbridge continued their controlled approach and benefitted from several excellent clearance kicks from Paul Kelly, one of which led to sustained possession on the Aire' line before giant second rower Andy Beale scored a well deserved try in the corner. The conversion was again missed to give a score of 10 - 7, but the Pigs had settled into their rhythm and were making ground with their high-tempo short game.
Stocksbridge winger Ryan Smith was next on the scoreboard, with a well taken try in the corner after Fly Half Paul Kelly showed great feet to beat the Aireborough defence and race towards the try line, before delivering an inch-perfect 25 yard pass to speed merchant Smith. Once again the conversion was missed from out wide to give a half time score of 15 - 7.
The Pigs started the second half brightly and continued to ask questions of the Aire' tackling, as powerhouse Ricky Rowett was held up agonisingly close after one of his many strong runs. However, it was the home side's defence that would be put to the test, as they defended well against a spirited Aireborough team, who had been stunned with the speed of the home team's attack. The Pigs soaked up pressure for long periods of time on their own try line, but they also threatened the Aire' line on many occasions, with Sam Whitaker, Dave Brown and Adam Frith all going close, but it was substitute Joe Smith, who scored the all important 4th try, after a strong line out catch and drive. That gave Stocksbridge only their second try bonus point of the campaign and although the conversion was missed, it stretched the Pigs lead to 13 points.
Aireborough gave the home team one final scare, as they again capitalised on a lapse in concentration by the home team and scored a converted try in the corner, but the Pigs held out and were deserved of a much needed 5 point win with a final score-line of 20 - 14. There were a number of notable performances including Ricky Rowett, Andy Beal and rookie prop Gary Woodcock, but the Man of the Match award went to livewire scrum half Adam Frith. The afternoon was tainted with a serious injury to hooker Michael Quinn, who has been excellent all season, but now looks set for a lengthy period on the sideline.
