Stocksbridge narrowly miss out with draw against Knarsborough

Fox Catering sponsored Stocksbridge RUFC travelled to their first away fixture of the season at Knaresborough where they narrowly missed out on the first win of the season.

After a challenging start, promising ex-colt Logan Hannah made his debut by scoring for the boys in blue with his first touch of the ball in adult rugby. Later on in the game he missed out on a second try where the ball was knocked out of his hands on the try line.

Ben Tyres (sponsored by The White Hart at Oughtibridge) returned from Cricket duties pairing up nicely in the centres with ex-colt Harrison Norman to create an explosive duo in the back line.

Crazy feet Jack “Speno” Spencer added to the points touching the ball down under the sticks sealing the deal with the points from the conversion. Throughout the game Speno’s kicking kept the travelling team in the game with territory in the attacking half.

“Wrecking Ball” Joe Smith (sponsored by Iceline) went over the whitewash picking up his first try of the season to secure the third try.

The pigs suffered three yellow cards throughout the 80 minutes resulting in playing a man down for a total of 30minutes! Jordan “Spud” Fletcher was penalised for a high tackle, Ben Tyres took one for the team for persistent off-sides and Steve Hawksworth received a questionable call for obstructing.

The final points for Stocksbridge came from a penalty kick by sharp looking Captain and Man of the Match “That Man” Adam Frith sponsored by Brian & Dawn Mills. This secured the score at 20-17 with minutes to go, in the final kick of the game Knaresborough struck back to finish the game at 20-20 with no time left to regain the lead.

The Man of Steel Award for September sponsored by Goodlad Contracting is given to Jack (Milky) Martin for a solid performance in this game at Number 8 and showing strong improvements in skills throughout the month.

Andy Lawrance’s team return home to Bolsterstone next Saturday 1st October against York RI - 3pm Kick Off.
Training continues on Wednesdays 6.15pm - all levels of experience welcome.
