Hull based Hessle travelled to a sunny Bolsterstone, (yes you read it right, sunny in November) to take on Globe sponsored Stocksbridge on Remembrance Weekend.
With Whitaker, Pearson & Spencer all returning to the starting line up and Roebuck, R Smith and Jones on the bench the Stocksbridge side looked to have strength in depth along with ex colt Joe Jnr Milky Martin making the team sheet for a second week running alongside now regular Logan Hannah.
The home team opened up the game with points from a penalty kick in front of sticks seeing Scott Bowskill put them ahead 3-0. Hessle found themselves giving away a further penalty but Stocksbridge was unable to take advantage missing the kick from just inside the half way line. Hessle continuously kicked out of pressure but solid fullback John Saddington (sponsored by Mr Nigel George) returned the ball with big physical carries.
Jack Pearson (sponsored by Hawshaw Plumbing) split the defence at the top of the field scoring the first try of the game followed by Scott Bowskill successfully converting the kick. Another penalty was given to Stocksbridge this time for a no arms tackle and the Hessle culprit received a yellow card, unfortunately the kick was short of the sticks this time. For the following ten minutes the away team put a shift in and kept Stocksbridge in their own half until the half time whistle. 10-0
Hessle started with fire in their belly’s in the second half and were now back up to a full 15, combined with a number of penalties awarded to them this allowed ground to be made against the Stocksbridge side. A team warning was given to both teams for the increasing penalty count. Veteran Scott Bowskill made an admirable run down the wing, seeing the ball recycled through the tackle to Sam Whittaker crashing in, repeated by Gary Woodcock before finding Paul Kelly at 10 who stepped defence scoring to the right hand side of the posts.
Scott Bowskill successfully converted. 17-0
John Saddington broke the line and kicked overhead with Whippet Callum Green supporting down the wing, possession was handed over to Hessle for off the feet at the ruck. Soon later Stocksbridge was awarded a scrum 7 meters out, the ball was sent to the feet of No.8 Jack Milky Martin and passed out to inside centre Jack Pearson who scored his second try of the game breaking through the defence under the sticks in the same manor he had in the first half. Paul Kelly successfully converted. 24-0
Tiring Stocksbridge lost concentration in the last two minutes of the game allowing Hessle backs to pass out wide to a three on one to score on the far right hand side. The conversion was a failed attempt leaving the final score 24-5.
A mention goes to prop Lewis Bowman (sponsored by Mr Mark Logan) who broke the line at at half way, was tackled at the ankles but found his feet and proceeded to the try line only to be pulled back by the ref for a “held tackle”.
Other mentionable players from coach Lawrence include Steve Hawksworth (sponsored by Gate Stoops Farm) and Jonathan Gill (sponsored by R-Autos Salvage) for strong and improved performances.
The Fox Catering of the match was awarded to Gary Woodcock (sponsored by Mr John Woodcock) for yet another solid performance in both attack and defence.
Match day balls sponsor for this week was Charlesworth Landscape Ltd.
Next week sees Stocksbridge take on Hornsea at home (KO 2.15pm) where a win will secure 6th place in the League regardless of other results.
