Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby were rocked this week by the news that influential back rower, & this terms top try scorer Pete Newton may have suffered a season ending knee injury in the recent away defeat at Knaresborough. The burly, experienced forward began the season in scintillating form, & his influence will be sorely missed. Newton is kindly sponsored by Mr Andrew & Mrs Shelley Bell. Better news for the club is that 2nd rowers ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker & the ‘clock tower’ Andy Beale are on the mend, & could both feature in this week’s Yorkshire 4 Counties, Round 5 clash at Coal Pit Lane, where York based Newtle Rowntree are the visitors, with a 3pm kick off. The club will also welcome back the versatile Liam O’Leary after unavailability due to work commitments. Head Coach, Andy Lawrence will be looking for an improved performance this weekend, after their disappointing display at Knaresborough recently, & further improvement when they travel to Leeds to face Modernians the following week. After the 1st XV game, there is a Past Players Association reunion in the clubhouse, & all are welcome for a pie & pea supper, plenty of beer & to regale tales of matches & previous victories in the blue & white colours. The club will also be showing the England World Cup quarter final v’s Fiji, live on the big screen on Sunday afternoon, with a 4pm kick off, again all are welcome.
The club will also be holding their annual Harvest Festival on 21st October, when Phil ‘Donk’ Watts, the Club Chairman will don his auctioneers hat for the evening.
