STOCKSBRIDGE RUGBY HOW IT WAS FORMED
STOCKSBRIDGE RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB
Stocksbridge, a young and vibrant club, was established in 1962, under our first and most beloved chair Gordon Harris. With the welsh interest in the works, the chemmy lab, metallurgic lab, melting shop and drawing office provided players and the first games were played at Barnsley, which gives us our close ties to that club.
There followed a successful playing period, first at Oxley park and then at Bolsterstone, where we play today. Changing was originally in the works gym, until we moved to the Old porters lodge, the oldest changing rooms in England. Unfortunately the after match celebrations moved around almost every pub in the valley, until we split with the works social services to establish our own clubhouse, in the old primitive chapel, where we are now. This was derelict and a mammoth undertaking, but at least we have now put down roots in the community and this benefits us greatly.
As the schools and welsh connection now produce no players, we recognised some time ago that we needed to develop our own. This has had various ups and downs but at the moment is flourishing and its past successes can be seen throughout the club.
Stocksbridge is a great reviver of declining players, because it is fun to play for. We have extended many a career and as well as all the new young players, we will still need all the old players, to help run the club, prop up the bar and offer advice and encouragement, to those "softies" playing today. Whether or not they listen to the old farts is up to them.
The clubs "FINEST HOUR" was winning the coveted "YORKSHIRE SILVER TROPHY" at Selby on 23rd February 1997, beating Hullensians 11-10,in the dying seconds of injury time. Never have we seen so many grown men cry.
