Player Coach Aaron Kaye declared himself pleased with the performance & attitude shown, as Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby entertained a strong Wath RUFC 2nd string in a pre-season friendly match at the Coal Pit Lane Arena at the weekend. The visitors eventually ran out winners by 35pts to 12pts but not before Stocksbridge showcased some of their structure in both offence & defence. Will Cuttell signed from neighbours Wortley, was given a starting berth on the front row, & there were welcome returns to the side for fly half Tim Burton along with, the fleet footed Jack Leary in the centre. Stocksbridge gave debuts to youngsters Oliver O'Keefe on the wing & Elliot Shaw at full back & both suggested they will retain their places with impressive debut performances. The evergreen 'Clock Tower', skipper Andy Beal lead from the front as always touching down for a brace of tries, Beal is kindly sponsored by Club Secretary Mr Mick Gribbins, whilst Jake Bevan sponsored by Mackenzie Stocks Joinery was successful with one conversion. The Victoria Motors player of the match award went to Callum Green for an industrious display on both sides of the ball, Green is kindly sponsored by Mrs Emily Green. The league action gets under way this weekend with a home derby clash against Hallamshire RUFC, kick off is 3pm. Round 2 of the Counties 4 Yorkshire Sth competition will see Stocksbridge make the short journey to near neighbours Wortley RUFC as they continue their Fox Valley Trophy series. Speaking after the game Beal said 'it was a good run out for the boys, a chance to dust the cobwebs off & get some valuable minutes on the park', before adding, 'it was pleasing to see some lads returning to play & to welcome a couple of debutants too, it felt good to be back out there & we're really looking forward to the league campaign, & taking all our training into action'.
